CHAPTER 15

I didn’t sleep well last night and today I’m hurting. I can’t shake the feeling that last night’s debacle was somehow my fault, no matter how many times I rationalize it otherwise. At least today is Friday and I can try to recuperate this weekend. However, I still have to make it through today’s cases. I had two cups of coffee to try to wake myself up this morning, but I’m still feeling fuzzy.

I’m sitting in the resident office with the rest of the team reporting on the patients we each saw this morning. I’m the last resident to go. I give the vitals, lab results, overnight events, and current status of the four patients I rounded on. When I finish, Ravi asks, “What about Mrs. Dershman?” He looks over at Victor who was on call last night and was responsible for assigning the patients to be seen by each resident this morning.

Victor looks down at his list and hesitates for a moment before responding, “Ahhh, Dani was supposed to see Mrs. Dershman.” He turns his head to me with a look of sincere shock that I hadn’t seen this patient. What a lying lowlife cocksucker!

Oh, no you don’t, you little pissant. “Victor, you never said anything to me about Mrs. Dershman.”

“Dani, I know I did. Why would I have assigned you only four patients when everybody else had to see five? This last one was obviously yours.”

“No, you didn’t Victor,” I protest. “I specifically remember repeating back to you the names of the patients you assigned me last night to confirm who I needed to see this morning.” I can’t believe he is lying through his teeth again and blaming it on me!

Ravi interrupts our argument. “Guys, I don’t give a rat’s ass who was supposed to see the patient. I just need the patient evaluated now and her status reported back to me. Dani, why don’t you go see her because I have to go over a couple of things with Victor. You both are scrubbing into Weinhurst’s cases today, so Victor will get things started when we finish talking. You shouldn’t be too late to the OR.”

“Fine,” I concede as I stand up. I look over at Victor and give him a good hard glare. I wish I could smack that smug-ass grin he is trying to stifle off his repugnant face. How dare he make me look like I dropped the ball in front of the entire team when it was his fucking mistake!

As I’m about to walk out the door, Ravi calls out to me, “Hey, before you leave, Dani. The speaker who is supposed to give a talk at Grand Rounds conference on Monday canceled. We’re going to do case conferences instead and I need a resident to prepare a case. Victor said you are the next fourth-year resident up to present.

“I just did the presentation on urinary incontinence last week for Wednesday night’s resident conference. I thought it was Victor’s turn next.”

“He prepared the incident list for Morbidity and Mortality conference this week already.
